We, the Joint Action of Independent Women’s Organizations Abroad, firmly believe in freedom of expression and the democratic right of all people to freely express their views. We strongly condemn the fascistic approach and the widespread attacks taking place across social media platforms, demonstrations, and public gatherings.

These attacks are carried out extensively—particularly against women—in streets, social media, and virtual spaces, and are accompanied by the humiliation and denial of women’s political and social agency. As women have been among the principal subjects and driving forces of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising, opponents of freedom and equality seek, through sexist methods, to push them from the center of the struggle to its margins and to restrict their social presence and sphere of activity.

The masculine, authoritarian, and centralist atmosphere that gradually emerged following the revolutionary “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising—under slogans such as “Great Nation” and “Lion and Sun Revolution”—has gone beyond cyber harassment and has extended to humiliation, insults, and verbal abuse in social media and television interviews; sexual and gender-based harassment; attacks against ethnic and national identities and diverse gender and sexual orientations; and the vilification and defamation of feminists, leftist forces, and other political activists who struggle against oppression, war, and militarism.

This current, incapable of tolerating freedom of thought and expression, seeks to impose its preferred model of authoritarian and leader-centered politics. To establish such a model, it is already attempting to institutionalize a culture of monopoly and uniformity by spreading hatred against every dissenting voice. The tools of this culture range from misogynistic and sexist insults to death threats and the repetition of slogans calling for the death of others. These behaviors are not merely the isolated actions of a few individuals; rather, they are part of a structure of power that openly defines itself through the slogan: “One Country, One Nation, One Leader.”

As feminist women, we consider it our responsibility to stand against and resist right-wing, patriarchal, nationalist, and all other ideological currents that seek to marginalize women’s political agency through humiliation, insults, misogynistic language, and sexist abuse. We do not forget that the Islamic fundamentalists led by Khomeini also began their attacks on women and women’s freedoms not initially in the name of their newly established state, but in the name of “the people,” relying on pressure groups and Islamic vigilante forces.

In the course of our collective struggle, we believe in our own political subjectivity and agency, and we firmly oppose all forms of patriarchal thinking, whether advanced by men or by women. In our struggle to free ourselves from the misogynistic and destructive domination of the Islamic Republic—and to confront all similar ideologies—we will continue fighting for the creation of a free, democratic society free from all forms of discrimination, oppression, and inequality.
